—UNKNOWN SINGER television program people had gone to Mitch Miller, head oi Columbia’s popular recording.-. J seeking an appropriate song for j their play, and Miller had thm | number on hand. All agreed o. j was appropriate. Actually, Miller had received j ‘.his song, words and music by j Betty Bou Carson, a few years I ago when it bore the title "Bet I Me Go. Devil.” She had submit- j Led it as a number tailored to the j Singing talent of Frankie Baine. j Miller liked the music but not the j .yric. Eventually the songwritei orned in the present versions. Song decided upon, came the problem of who would record i N The "Studio One” people thought it should be done by a "name” singer, but Miller talked them •nit of this. He argued it would hurt the play if the viewers heard ihe voice of a Sinatra, Shore o; other stai because a mental picture of a familiar singer woul I keep intruding. The power of such a showcase as "Studio One" prdvided in this particular instance is demonstrated by the fact that the Weber According was put on the market a couple of weeks before the play was done on CBS-TV. Absolutely nothing happened with it. But the morning of Nov. 16. according to Columbia official^, •there was a floral of telephom calls and telegrams from all over the count!y from dealers demanding records. Radio disk jockeys were besieged with requests to play the record and information as to where it could o<bought.
