It s Blackwood On Bridge Contract Looked Easy, But Went Down One Mr. Champion opened the queen of diamonds against today’s femr-spade contract and Miss Brash, knowing he wouldn’t lead the queen if he held the ace. played low from dummy. with a trump and ruffed her last dub. All nght so far. But how was she going to get back to her hand to pick up the last trump? If she played the king of diamonds, Mr. Dale would ruff it. So. she led the ace and another heart, hoping Mr. Dale would have to win the second one. Mr. Dale mentally crossed his fingers and ducked like a man. Mr. Champion won and returned the jack of diamonds. The king was put up and Mr. Dale got his ruff. Another heart furnished the setting trick.

It looked pretty hopeless to Mr. L>ale, too. But he didn't give up. He wanted to ruff a diamond and apparently the only quick way to reach his partner’s hand wh.s in the club suit. However. a little thinking showed him that was practically impossible. WHAT DID SHE HAVE? What did Miss Brash have for her two bids? The highest heart she could have was the queen. Clearly she had nothing at all In diamonds. Mr. Dale himself had the king of clubs and if Mr. Champion had the ace, then Miss Brash had bid as she did with a spade suit and two side queens at best. Pretty strong even for her. Mr. Dale decided on another course. With the purpose of jamming up the transportation between the closed hand and dummy. he led a small trump at trick
two.
HAS TO RUFF Now Miss Brash saw that in order to count up to 10 tricks, she had to ruff off two clubs. After winning the spade lead in her hand she cashed the ace of clubs and ruffed a club in dummy. She got back to her hand
