The late Lieutenant Bakalar 1 was an electrician by trade, who

<*n!isted in the Army of the United States in the grade of Aviation Cadet, at Fort Benjamin Harrison, in Indianapolis. on January 26. 11*42. He received his pre-fight training at Santa Ana. California, from March 25. lf*42 to April 24. 1942. and his primary' flight training at Merced Army Flying School, Merced, California, and Advanced Flying

Lieutenant Bakalar was promoted to First Lieutenant on September 30. 1943. then transferred to Mabry Field. Florida, where he received final fighter training before departing for overseas with the 353rd Fighter Squadron. 354th Fighter Group, for duty in the European Theatre of Operations.

Lieutenant Bakalar Is survived by his wife. Mrs. Dorothea J. Bakalar. and daughter. Suzanne. of 6326 Garfield, in Hammond, and his mother. Mrs. Marie Bakalar. of 227 Lawndale, also of Hammond. His list of decorations and aw’ards. include the Distinguished Service Cross, Air Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters, the Pur pie Heart, and the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars, the Distinguished Unit citation. and the Aviation Badge, and Sharpshooter Badge. The name of Lieutenant Bakalar, was submitted to Colonel Herbert O. Hamilton. Commander at Atterbuiy Air Base, on December 22, 1953. in a letter from Indiana Governor George N. Craig, after extensive research into the military records of all deceased veterans of the Second World War from Indiana.
