LOOKING... ...AT LIFE By 5^Andi»M
Four of us wore playing Bolivia the other evening —a somewhat new game similar to Samba It is played with three decks which makes the shuffling very difficult if you haven't got a . huff ling machine, and ^.together it is a rather crazy game. After we had played it for about three hour , my partner and I had won one dollar, and my wife and her partner had To.Tt a dollar So if you figure the th ng out. my wife and I being partners in finance, wc had brok-
en even. In the opinion of some, that •ort of an evening spent in riot*us gambling will probably be onsidered sinful and a terrible • a.-te of time. It would probably ,ave been much better to occupy our time with the discussion of the South East Asia Conference, or with political arguments. But who wants to be smart and erudite ail the time? I think card playing is a very good deversion particularly if luck is on your side.
Is there really such a think as luck in cards? Is there such a thing as luck in business, luck in love, luck in life? That was the subject of our discussion over sandwiches and

coffee after we got through playing and after my partner and I had divided our hard won lucre. It so happens that I have absolutely no card sense at all, just as I have no talent for anything that is connected with figures. And in cards the most important factor is to be able to figure exactly what has been played and what is still in the deck. Yet. I usually do my share of winning. In my opinion, it is simply because I draw better cards than my opponents and thus am able to help my partner with my draws. I maintain there IS such a thing as luck. I know that there is absolutely no scientific basis for my belief, but I have seen it time and again—in every phase of life. So. I don't believe in the impersonation of luck as Lakshmi. the wife of Vishnu, in Hindu mythology. She was also the Toddess of beauty, described as a lady of golden color, seated on a lotus blossom, bom from a sea of milk that was churned from ambrosia. Nor do I believe in the Roman idea of Fortuna, that fickle goddess who was pictured with a rudder and a ball, conducting the unsteady vacillation of chance. Those old Hindus and Greeks and Romans, when they didn't understand a thing. simply created a god or a goddess for it and held him or her responsible for what happened afterward. It was a very convenient but a very unscientific way of getting rid of responsibilities.

The report i m r c l '-ensure on two of five misconduct charges. I Edwa d Wiliams said the Wisconsin Republican would fight the 1 charges when the Jenate rccxavencs.
Whether or not there is such a thing as luck cannot, of course, at this date, be proven. It is simply a matter of belief. The best authorities for a solution of the problem of whether there IS luck or not are those who haven't any. They are sure to tell you that when the other fellow gets ahead of them in any way t has been luck, not ability oi what have you.
