Pass Pass Dbl. All Pass Here is another important consideration on the subject of reopening the bidding. When the opponent's bidding indicates they have no long suit (a suit of eight or more cards in the two hands), it is better than two to one that your side doesn't either. In today’s deal. Mr. Truex decided since his opponents apparently couldn’t go anywhere, his side probably could. They did. They went down 500 points.

WE DON'T KNOW OF A SINGLE WOMAN WHO HAS INSTALLED A SPEED QUEEN AUTOMATIC DRYER WHO DOESN'T CONSIDER IT THE BEST, WORK-SAVING APPLIANCE SHE EVER OWNED. IT STANDS TO REASON. OVERLOOKS PRINCIPLE Mr. Truex overlooked the principle mentioned above. Mr. Dale had denied clubs. Mr. Champion had denied diamonds. And Mr. Dale had denied spades. On’this sequence of bidding it was almost certain that the NorthSouth hands did not contain a combined holding of eight cards in any suit. So the odds were very much against finding an eight card holding in the East-West hands. When there are no long suits around, you don't belong in the bidding except in the rare case where you hold a clear preponderance of high cards. ONLY A FEW POINTS If Mr. Truex had passed throughout the auction, he would have lost only a few points, plus the value of apart-score. After he re-opened the bidding cm the third round with a double, there was no way to get out of the trap. If the opponents played one no trump, redoubed, they woud make an extra trick, plus game. Mrs. Keen tried for a better spot with a two heart bid. But, as might have been expected, she was working with a trump suit of only seven cards and could not avoid a three trick set.
we thought of peacemakers and solacers, thought of women rather than men? Someone, when I brought up ! the subject, remarked that woj men don’t have good voices for preaching. They are too strident, he said. Their voices break too easily. That, in my opinion,’is a very small matter. Voices can ! be trained and, after all, the voice is only the carrier of a thought, of an idea and of an ideal.
LOOKING... ...AT LIFE Bv Friffc Brandis At the recent meeting of the World Council of Churches, held in Evanstown. 111., a French delegate, Mile. Madeleine Barrot, expressed the desire that more women ought to be let into church affairs and permitted to take an active part in matters of religion and Christianity. By “affairs”, she did not mean church excursions, Sunday school picnics or dinners in the church basements. She meant that women should take a more active part in bringing religion to life and making Christianity something by which to live. At the Council convention, where 163 denominations (yes 163!) were represented, only 15 out of the more than 600 delegates were women. Yet, isn't it the natural tendency of women to bring about peace and harmony and the one great thing for which the Council convened— unity? I believe that women would make ideal ministers and preachers of the gospel. Your mother and mine are women. Haven’t we always, when i
“Woman seem to have an even more intense desire for unity,” Mile. Barrott said, “than men. They want unity and Christian fellowship with all their hearts. But this desire cannot be satisfied with the limited participation allowed them.” “Why are women not used to a greater extent?” she asked. "Why are women not allowed to be members of the session, the vestry, the official board?” And now another point which I am sure will bring me a flood j of letters pro and con such as I religion. always get when I talk about Why is it necessary to have 163 different denominations in ' he Protestant church ? Why is it so terribly difficult to bring about unity and why must so many futile meetings be held in order to come to a common understanding ? Does it really make so much difference by what method you approach God as long as you DO approach him? I saw r a cartoon in my newspaper the other day. A man was very sick but his doctor couldn’t make up his mind just what it was that ailed him. So he called in a flock of the best doctors n town for consultation. While they were all standing there, uiddled around the man’s bedside, the patient quietly passed out. The caption of the cartoon said simply: “Too many doctors.” Isn’t it a little that w r ay with those 163 denominations? The world is on fire. There isn’t an awful lot of time left to put it out. One of the greatest of all fire extinguishers is RELIGION. Why take the time to decide which brand of extinguisher to use when there is one hanging on the wall right next to you ?
