DELAY HARVESTING SWEET POTATOES S</me Hoosier K ar< l<*ners mistakenly believe vines of sweet potato plants should be cut off before sun-up and immediately after first frost has blackened
the leaves
W. B. Ward, Purdue University extension horticulturist, says it would be far better this fall for home vegetable growers to wait a while longer than first frost. He says that even though leaf growth is damaged by frost there's still some food manufacturing processes being carried on in stems and feeder roots. Experiments over a period of several years have shown delays in harvesting can boost sweet potato yields as much as 60 bushels, on
the average.
The ftQ leMi * » i< lav ha [itil mi«l-Oct«rbei, under
usual fall conditions in Indian?., will realize more number one grade sweet potatoes plus greater yields.
