LOOKING... ...AT LIFE dy Erict Brandeis Some time ago I wrote a column about speech made by Albert E. Diem, one of the top officials of the Dictaphone Company of Bridgeport. Conn. In it he advocated “Maintenance” for human beings, maintenance be,ng the same thing that is given to machinery. ‘‘In industry,” he said “intelligent maintenance means caring for a machine before it breaks down.” It is simply a practical application of the, adage, “a stitch in tilde saves nine.”

My column appears in INFORMACION. one of Havana's largest newspapers.

Now conies a letter from Dr. Gallos A. Fernandez, on the letterhead of “Institucion National de Examen y Diagnostico.” which informs me that in Cuba they have the sort of an organization which I advocated in my column. and that it is doing very' well. “Your column seems to have been written in many ways in accordance with the directives followed by this institution,” the doctor says in Spanish “Not only is tne I.N E D. an institution of preventive medicine, but more than that, it practically carries through the idea ‘‘rom ancient (China, which you mention, through its membership system. For So a month members are entitled to extensive checkups once a year as well as, to practically every private medical .-ervice as well as hospitalization, etc. “We are trying to carry on an

educational campaign, teaching the public that the READ fight against sickness is to avail yourself of these services on time and before actual treatment or hospitalization become necessary..”

I think we can learn something from the Cuban idea. Hospitalization and operations are already well taken care of by our Blue Cross and Blue Shield. But it is the matter of “Maintenance" that still ne-ds a, whole lot of attention and that is still very much neglected in our country. We are great people for locking the barn after the horse is stolen. We seem to take much better care of our material belongings than of our health which, after all, is the greatest | asset, we possess. What good are the finest

jewelry, the most expensive clothes, the most gilt-edged securities if we are bedridden ? Much hospitalization and many r.n operation could be avoided if we went to our doctor regularly twice a year and had him check up on us, or if we couki join :n organization such as the one in Havana. There is nothing on earth as wonderful Lis the human body. Is that body not worth maintaining in good order so that it may function properly and keep us enjoying all the other gifts God has given us?
