A spade or a diamond lead by Mr. Abel would have made things easy for Miss Brash, as either would have given her time to knock out the ace of diamonds while she still held a club stopper. We can hardly blame Mr. Abel for not opening a club, but at j least he chose an opening which enabled his side to hold the lead and thus retain their chance of defeating the contract. KI LE VS. JUDGEMENT The lead was the deuce of hearts and Mr. Muzzy won with the king. He promotly proceeded to gum up the works by his blind and stubborn adheienee to the ’’rule” about always returning partner’s lead. This was another ease where judgement should have superseded rules. All Mr. Muzzy had to do was to take a look at the dummy etjpecially that douMeton jack of clubs. With the aee of diamonds in his hand to block dummy's five-card suit, it should have been clear to him that the
two would have blown the hand wide open. LAST TRICK But not Mr. Muzzy. He always icturns his partner’s lead. And to make matters worse, he returned the trey of hearts instead of the nine. Mr. Abel then figurI ed him for four hearts and Mis*; Brash for three.

After winning trick two with the ace of hearts, Mr. Abel continued the suit. Miss Brash won led diamonds until Mr. Muzzy
took the ace and that was the last trick for the defense.
LOOKING... ...AT LIFE By Eridi Brandeis
A leamed college professoi said the other day that if you have an3’ superstitions it is a sign that you are not fully civilized. Persona 11 j r . I cannot see for the life of me why I am less civilized because I won't walk under a ladder, or because I cross my fingers for good luck, than the J fellow who goes right ahead with his automobile after a black cat crosses in front of him. Just the other day a little six or seven-week old black kitten crossed a side road as I was going to turn into it. This side load saves me about four miles going home, but did I take it? I did not. I went four miles out of my way. Not that I am superstitious. but why take a chance?
This matter of civilization is lelative, anyway. I don’t see how We can talk so much about “civilization” when it takes 4,0C0 police to protect Queen Elizabeth of England when she goes on a visit to Northern Ireland or when it requires a motorcycle escort of 100 men and a big seclet service detail to look aftei President and Mamie Eisenhower, w hen they come to New Yor k for a few' minutes to register for the election. When you come right down to it. is it civilized for a fellow' to catch and kill 25 fish when he cannot possibly eat or give away more than three or four? We are still so far away from REAL civilization that a fewharmless superstitions really don’t matter.
And. talking about superstitions: If you want to know about some real ones, you ought to listen to XV. R. Draper, who went into the deepest Ozarks and interviewed an 84-year-old hillbilly at Chadwick. Mo. He told him about a plant called the love vine that grows down there If the plant flourishes. your sweetheart is going to lemain true If it withers well then it’s the other way ’round. If a red bird flies across a girl’s path she will be kissed twice before sundown. When she plucks a hair from her head 'ims it through her hand and it curls, she is certain her lovei will be faithful; if it doesn't, he will turn to another woman. If a young man wants to find out if his girl loves him. he makes this test: He bends a mullein leaf down toward the home of his girl. If that leaf grows straight again, then she doelove him. If it stays down, he’d
better get himself another girl. I When a death occurs in the ; Ozarks. someone immediately stops the clock, covers even.* mirror in the cabin and pulls down | all the window shades. That is I

If a bird flies into the house; if your ears ring; if a rooster crows in the doorway; if the cattle bawl in the night; if the horses play in ttte barnyard; or if a window falls; all that is bad luck, as sure as you live. If red birds hover around the back door, it means trouble for the whole family. If a snake gets into the cabin home, then enemies are plotting evil. Never
