Atlantic. Acosta piloted Admiral Richard Byrd's tri-motored Ford “America*' from Long Island to Fiance. Their goal was Paris, but after a 32-hour flight over stormy water they circled above an overcast for 10 hours. Acosta finally spotted a break in the clouds and nosed earthward. The “America” crashlanded in the surf, 12 feet from the French shore. Acosta. Byrd and two other companions on the hazardous flight paraded in triumph down Broadway tin their return to New York. But Acosta lost his pilot's lij cense for stunting and was fined $1,000 for flying a plane that had been seized by a sheriff. Then he was jailed for five months, charged with abandoning his second wife and their two children. He collapsed on a New York street two years ago, penniless and ravaged by advanced tuberculosis. Recently he developed cancer.
