looking... ...AT LIFE By Erick Branrlais

The reaj*on I think so is because *o many people, in the course of a eonverration. say, ' My father used to say ;m i then it comes.

Isay, "Mind your out buMr— s,” and refused to 1 deh.

Almost everyb^jriy remembers fonie particular advice or wam>K bis mdtiier f»r fatnei gave him.

Well, my father’s favorite advice to me was "mind your own business.’' Whenever I came to him with some especially juicy piece of neighborhood go;-^ip or | with a hand-picked rumor, he'd

To show you how weii I heeded his advice, let me remind you that I bc'-ame a newspaper reporter, in which profession I minded everybody's business except my own. i And ever since those days — and, if I had to live my life all

over again. I d start right in as newspaper reporter again—I rave always been much more in-ere.-t'd in other people’s biusine>s than in my own. As my wife will discove: to her grief when I depart this earthly phere and she opens my safe deposit box. Speaking of this earthly -phere. here is another piece of bu.-iness which Ls not really mine at all. but which has aroused my interest. What business do we have ‘way

up m the stratosphere? Haven't we enough trouble on this earth without sticking our nose into space and trying to find om whether we can't discover some more trouble a million miles from here?

The Air Force has just acquired its first imitation space ship to study what will happen when we can really get up more than SO.oOO feet nnd explore "outer space.” The ship has been delivered to

;; ; and h£R3 go;n’ fishin’

the School of Aviation Medicine at San Antonio, Texas, and the researchers are supposed to get most of the sensations they would on a flight into space. Higher than 80 0O0 feet there is so little air that conventional pressurized cabins cannot be j used, because compressors canj not pump in enough air to prevent altitude sickness. There is a lot more scientific stuff to this "imitation space ship.” but it’s too involved for me to explain it to you. And in Innsbruck. Austria, Dr Walter Doinberger, builder of Germany's desti uctive Y-2 rocket. has just designed (for the U.

S. Government) a rocket plane capable of flying 10,000 miles an hour. The plane would have to be shot out of a mother plane and could drop a one-ton tomb. It will have a range of 9,00o

miles. Nice going.

Another German scientist said he believes that space suits of the future would be made of metal braid and hermetically sealed. They would be complete with built-in radios and metal boots, while a small recoil “pistol" attached to the back would provide the power to move the

spaceman, he said.

I don’t know whether this item does not really belong in the
