LOOKING... ...AT LIFE By Encb B^nden
A little farther dov^ii this column I want to talk about .'lumething serious. But. since it is rather difficult to hold people's attention with serious matters. I shall first, tell you about two not-too-young New York lovers. The woman had the man arrested on a grand larceny charge. He had allegedly promised to marry her in 1952. But he didn't keep his promise, in spite

Your Automatic
WATER HEATER!
FLUE FUSS FUMES
• Clean because it’s flameless, the automatic electric water heater is absolutely safe. You can install it anywhere in your home—even in a closed closet—without worry. There’s no flue, no fuss, no fumes! In addition, the electric water heater is easy to install, and very often saves money because it permits shorter pipe runs that cut down losses due to heat radiation. Yes, for all the hot water you want, whenever you want it, be safe. Get the safest type of water heater ever devised • *. electric, of course!

of the fact that she said she had given him $11,000 and wasted three wedding gowns and a whole lot of patience, waiting for him •o make good. In addition and this is probably one of the saddest features of the whole sad case— worrying o much about the matter, she had grown from size 10 to "stout.” which as every' woman knows, is no desirable size to have, particularly—for one who now has to find herself a husband.
The man denied the whole business, of course. As a matter of fact, his attorney produced a three-page telegram written by the waiting-at-the church bride which read in part, "Why am I such a joke? Are you going to marry me ” Which question proved beyond the shadow of a doubt, the lawyer alleged, that there was no definite understanding between them. Else, why should .he have asked WHETHER he was going to marry her.
The judge, completely mixed up. released the swain in $1,000 bail and set a time for the hearing.
Now' to the serious part. The whole country is afraid of a depression, or what<J»er other name be used for the decline in production and buying which exists at the moment. What causes this “depression”? I personally don't know. I am no economist. But George B. Park, one of General Electric's advertising executives, told the Association of National Advertisers, what the reason is. “Advance publicity for the business slump has been terrific.” he said; ‘from both the rosyhued optimists and the peddlers of gloom.” A nation can TALK and THINK itself into trouble, he said. “We should know that a severe economic decline or dislocation does not have to happen, if advertising and promotion and
selling will rise to accept the challenge."
It seems to me that in recent years advertising has gone far afield from Its original purposes. Nowadays the emphasis is not on the merits of the merchandise a V ertised but on free trips to Europe, on free television sets, efrigerators and many other ‘absolutely free prizes,” if you will only sit down and write a letter in 25 words or less on Why I like Schmierola.” Furthermore. I am sure that people are getting tired of lookng at gorgeous movie stars advertising this or that product and ising that as a reason why they ihould use it. too. Women hawmirrors, you know, and the mir--or nowadays is the one thing hat contains neither lanolin nor hlorophyll. It seems to me that the depression is one of the best advertised articles in the country. Just a little more selling and it will be here.
