It s Blackwood On Bridge Unbiddable Bid Is Key To Slam The key bid in today's deal was Mr. Masters’ three diamond bid. When you have a very strong hand and exceptionally good support for partner’s suit, it is often necessary to tell that story by bidding a suit which is, technically, not biddable. South dealer Both sides vulnerable North (Mr. Masters) S - J 8 H - A K 6 5 4 2 D - A K Q C - 4 2

club, hoping his partner had the queen But that gave Mr. Dale his contract, too.

West (Mr. Abel) S - K Q 4 H - none D - J 10 8 7 C - K J 10 9 8 7

East (Miss Brash) S - 10 a 7 5 3 2 H - 7 D - 9 6 5 C - 6 5 3

South (Mr. Dale) S - A 6 H - Q J 10 9 8 3 D - 4 3 2 C - A Q The bidding: South West North East 1 H 2 C 3D Pass 3 H Pass 5 H Pass 6 H All Pass In this pleasant situation you forget about technicalities. Theie is very littie danger in responding >n any suit, regardless of its length, and no danger at all in responding in a suit of lower value than partner’s. SHOW HIGH CARDS One thing to remember. . . when you do find it advisable to make a jump response in a nonbiddable suit, make sure that you choose a suit in which your principal high card strength is located. For example, if your choice lay between a six-card suit headed by a jack and a three-card suit headed by ace, king, by all means choose the latter. In doing so you are lending material assistance to partner in determining how high the bidding should go. In this deal Mr. Masters knew the hand was going to be played in hearts. If he had jumped immediately to five hearts, it is unlikely that Mr. Dale would have gone on to six. The actual three diamond bid “covered" Mr. Dale's oad holding of four, trey, deuce in that suit. Mr. Dale .figured (correctly) that his partner was doubtful only about the possibility of quick losers in the black suits. Holding ace-queen in one and ace-six in the otner, he was glad to bid the slam. EASY PLAY Although it wasn't a laydown, the right play was easy after the king of spades opening. Mr Dale won with the ace. took one round of trumps, cashed three diamond tricks, then led a spade to put Mr. Abel in with the queen. At this point a spade or diamond return would let Mr. Dale ruff in dummy while discarding the queen of clubs from his hand. Mr. Abel sensed this and led a

LOOKING... ...AT LIFE By Erich Brandeis It isn't until one reads such a publication at Father James Keller's "Christopher News Notes’ - that one realizes how far one has grown away from the faith once taught, at his mother’s knee, in the every day fight for existence. Father Keller has made his life’s work the teaching of the use of religion as a practical appliance to help one to live. Perhaps it is bad taste to compare religion with a storehouse. But in the Christopher founder’s opinion—at least as I see it religion is a storehouse in which to store all that is good in the human heart, and from which to draw supplies, as they are needed.

In his recent News Notes. Fa ther Keller says that the devil is always on the job to stop the human mind. Among his most effective methods are-

It seems that the problem of Uivenile delinquency is day by day becoming more acute in our big cities. Recently a New York teacher was attacked by three of his pupils and mercilessly beaten up. Now they are investigating the whole juvenile delinquency program in the New York public schools. It seems to me that if. instead of so much investigating, there would be more teaching of the thoughts expressed by Father Keller and by the letter from the mother, the whole ju- \ enile delinquency problem rould be solved, perhaps not right away, zut. “by taking one step after the other in the right diiection.” KOACHDALE Mr. and Mrs. Alva Ford of Ladoga were Sunday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gericke and daughter and Mrs. Maggie Gericke. Miss Essie Summers has returned home after visiting friends in Connersville. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Riddle and family of Ladoga and Mr. and Mrs. Hester Ellis of Indianapolis spent Sunday with Mrs.
