What has happened to this marvelous world of ours in this twentieth century of God's grace? Mankind seems to be passing through a sea of troubles which has no counterpart in human history. There are wars and rumors of wars among the nations, and many of the nations themselves are split into warring factions, each faction striving for supremacy, and each intolerant of the views, hopes, and rights of others. The great trouble with the world is that men have forgotten God. 1 hey no longer seek spiritual guidance, but follow the vain ways of the modern world. We have become a cynical, materialistic ^generation. If this drift toward world tragedy and chaos is ever stopped, the churches of the world must do it. The world’s hope—our hope —is in God and His Church. He alone can save mankind from a sorrowful fate. The Church seeks to turn the hearts of men from the ways of war and fear and hate to the ways of peace and love.

It's Blackwood On Bridge He Talks. But Doesn't Play, Expeil Game The reason Mr. New is usually a kibitzer is that he sounds like an expert but doesn't play like one. He can talk about ( «ny angle of the game. But when he is in there, lie doesn't recognize the need for plays which are exceptions to the general rules. he knows some-

thing about ibokl-up plays -ducking the first icad of a suit to gain some kind of an advantage. In this particular hand, ducking the tirst lead a distinct disad-

vantage.

YYHAT ABOUT SPADES? Mr Masters opening lead was the six of hearts ,ind Mr. New lost no time playing the trey from the board If the Icad were from a holding headed by king-lo oi queen-10. Mr. Dale would win the first heart trick but then dummy's remaining hearts would bottle up the suit every satisfac-

torily.

Good reasoning, but not applicable to this particular situation. What about the other suits? Specifically, what about the spado suit? Mr. Dale won the first trick w ith the king of hearts and promptly shifted to a low spade. From there on Mr. Newhad no chance for his contract. ACE KNOCKED OUT His ace of spades was knocked out while Mr. Masters still had the ace of diamonds foi an entry and the defenders took three spades, a heart and a dia-

mond.

Correct play in this case wa.i to win the first trick with the ace of hearts and shift to a diamond. continuing that suit until the ace was knocked out. At that point it would be extremely imlikely that the defenders could run off four heart tricks -which they wouid have to do to beat the

hand.

When considering holding up in a suit, it pays to check youi whole hand to make sure that a switch to a new suit will not prove more embarrassing than I ho play of the suit opened.
