LOOKING... ...AT LIFE By Erich Brandeis Benjamin Disraeli said. ‘There are three kinds of lies: Dies damn lies, and statistics' I don't know’ the diffenene between lies and damn lies, but as long as a man as wise as Dislaeh said it. it must be so. Maybe he meant that regular lies are what w’e call white lies, but that damn lies are the lies we LIVE. But there isn’t much difference .between damn lies and a lot of the statistics we have thrown at us every day in the week. Take this “statistic" about f he living index iw’hatever that may be i going down 1-3 of one per cent. Just take that statistic lo your grocer some time. "That may be all eight as far as Washington is concerned,” he will probably tell you. “But in my store the living index has gone UP ten per cent.” It does you no good to wave the government statistic in his face With the living index down you pay 10 cents per pound more or you d'-n't get any steak! « • * Tlie trouble with statistics is that they depend largely upon the statements of people and people don't always tell you the l ruth. Like these television polls I was called on the phone the other night, and asked to w'hat program I was listening at the time. 1 wasn’t listening to any since our new dog had just started again to chew on a rug and 1 was •’reasoning'' with him at the time. But. just to satisfy the inquirer. I said. “I am listening to the Boston Pops orchestra.” That sounded as if I were quite a I civilized statistic, while in

reality I was only a damn liar , was 12 million more than that by The other day a national maga- ! 3950. zirve, whose publisher went to ; In his second message to Con-

Yale, published a statistic that "the average Yaleman. class '24, makes S25.111 a year.” It just so happens tJiat I have four Yalemen among my acquaintances. One is a drunk and never made more than a few thousand dollars a year He owes money Jo most of his friends .and I understand, he beats his wife. At least she is suing him for

divorce.

The other three have nothing fundamentally wrong with them, but none of them makes anywhere near $25,111 a year. The natural inference was. of course that ALL Yalemen are successful. Incidentally, two of the four I know, carry- the clipping from the magazine in their wallets Thus they drm't have to lie to anybody that they make $25,111 annually they just

show the clipping.

Mind you I have absolutely nothing against Yalemen The same statistic could just as well apply to Harvard, Cornell, Princeton. Darthmouth or Podunk. I only use it as an example.

gress. President Lincoln predicted that the U S. population would reach 251 million by 1930 He also .based that on thorough government research. Darrell Huff, the author of the book advises you to ask the following questions when confronted with a statistic: "Who says so?" 'Why?” How does he

know?"

And I suggest that you realize that YOU are not a statistic. Human beings are much more difficult tc classify than statistics.
