LOOKING... ...AT LIFE By Erich Brandeis I have her* 1 an item which may K of spinal interest at thu> time nf the year when all of ua ate pretty tireo of that "I-saw-Miunmy -kissing -Santa riatts” aong which must have been dinned into our ears at least a UMHisand times during the jbst parsed Christmas season. A Chi< ago woman sued her
husband for divorce She gave as ne of her charges the fact that he had seen him “necking and kissing his secretary for from five to 10 minutes.'' She also asked for a warrant of arrest and charged .Kth her spouse and his secretary with disoiderly conduct. His attorney asked that the charges be quashed. Under the law. he said, disorderly conduct a&s either “a breaching the peace, creating a riot, or making a loud noise.” The Judge decided as follows: 'T really cannot make up my

mind whether they were making a loud noise in the sense of the word. Charge dismissed." Or as an advertisement in a magazine puts it “It isn t the s;^e. it s the FEROCITY.” A Pittsburgh wife, also suing her mate for divorce, asked, among other things, for $7 a week for the support of her boxer dog. The Judge decided that it was beyond the power of the court to declare a uog a dependent tow ard whom a man had any i e.'Ponsibilities. The wife will have to care for her canine companion at her own expense. Now to another little true story which, if it had happened a few hundred years back, would have been called a parable. In Ephrain. Utah, a hoot owl got into a coop in which 4,000 10-week-old chicks were living The chicks were peaceful little things and meant no harm to uiyone, least of all to a hoot owl.. They just wanted to be ieft done, to be allowed to grow up to ull chickenhood. When farmer Wally Durfee got ip the next morning to attend to is chores, he found the owl still mgrily flying around the coop, making all kinds of un-ch ckenlike noises. But in one corner he also found 1,537 of his chicks dead. They lad been literally scared to death by the owl. who was behaving just as a hoot owl WOULD behave. You can interpret this story any way you want to. You can substitute any name 1 can think of several for “hoot owl." You may also picture tiie scared un i Jead chicks as almost any group of people that are subject to the “four fears" nowadays.
At any rate. although the story IS time, it also serves as a parable. And parables must be constructed by each reader ac-
cording to his own imagination.

By the way. Arthur Godfrey twitted Adlai Stevenson on his speech in which he had expressed his fear that all of us had become subject to the “four fears" instead of the “four freedoms.” Godfrey added, “I have not yel heard Adlai talk about the 'Bill of Frights.’ Although that might come later.” Life certainly is made up of many facets, isn't it? Perhaps that is why it is so scintillating— ;ust like a lovely diamond. But lo make it scintillate, you have
to let the sun shine on it. Even diamonds are dull in the dark.

You don’t have to consult a crystal ball to see how much you can save at AAP right now. All you have to do is compare AlkP's prices on scores and scores of items. As for the rest of 1954 .. . the prospect looks equally bright. Naturally we can’t predict wholesale food prices, but we can promise that whenever they go down AkP’s prices will be reduced as promptly as possibl# to help you save more in ’54. Come see ... come save at AfcP!
