Fillmore's Cardinals rolled jvcr Claj'ton’s Cardinals in the 3reencastle gym Tuesday night by the final score of 58 to 48. It was the 11th straight win of the season for the East Putnam nquad and only the second setback for the Hendricks county team. Fillmore, pacts! by I toss and Greenlee, was out in front at the juarter, 12 to 8. Clayton braced n the second period and the count at the half was knotted at 21-21. Fillmore spurted as the third frame got underway and jumped into a .'JO-21 advantage. Clayton again made a battle out of the proceedings and climbed to within five points of the Cards, 38 to e>0. With Ross showing the way, Fillmore outscored Clayton 20 points to 15 in the fourth quarter and that was the ball game, 58 to 48. T. Cherry, the big. good-look-ing Clayton boy with the double zero on his jersey, was individual high scorer for the evening as he chalked up nine field goals and three free tosses for a total of 21 points. Herschel Ross, Fillmore’s blonde star, collected 20 points. Greenlee bit for 13 to help the Putnam school s cause. Clayton managed to salvage a part of the night's program as the Hendricks county B team won the curtain raiser, 21 to 13. Big delegations from Clayton and Fillmore witnessed the contest along with fans from Green•astlc and other parts of Putnam county. The crowd, however was not quite as large as that vhich saw the Fillmorc-Reels-ville tilt recently. After the smoke of battle cleared away, the Fillmore rooters \qere naturally elated as.they considered Clkytliii ** pnJRably » * * the toughest ball club on the:r Regular schedule. tile king of diamonds. Instead, lu* ducked the trick to give the impression that he had no possible side entries and that the only way to reach his hand was in the heart suit itself.
N#*#“ds Diamonds
Dummy’s ten won the second trick and Mr. Muzzy saw he had no chance for his contract un- ; less he brought in the diamonds. A t trick three he ied a diamond from the board and finessed the
queen. Mr. Dale won with his ione king and cashed three heart tricks to put the hand down one. “Bang down your ace of diamonds. Don’t take the finesse,” screamed Mr. Heinsite. "That’s ridiculous,” Mr. Muzzy replied. "With four diamonds out, how could I be expected to know Dale had a singleton king?” He appealed to Mr. Dale to support his argument but. the old master had to admit that this
lime (Whether by chance or not) Mr. Hein.sk e had something. Correct Play "He's right. Muzzy," Mr. Dale said. "Your coi reel play at the third trick was to lay down the ace of diamonds and not because you could figure me for the lone king. The point is that you could afford to lose a diamond trick to Mrs. Keen. If she won the second lead of diamonds with the king, she would have no
heart to return. Or, if she did, then the hearts would be divided evenly and we could win only three hearts and a diamond. “You could not afford to lose a diamond to me. Now, if I had the king of diamonds, guarded, 1 you were never going to make the hand. But you had absolutely nothing to lose by making a safety play against the possibility that I had the king all by itself.’’
It's Blackwood On Bridge Heinsite Sometimes Calls Cards Right Mr. Heinsite is not above expecting his partner to drop singleton kings and doubleton queens when there are five or six cards of a suit outstanding. In most cases, of course, this is completely unreasonable. But there was an odd twist in today’s deal which made Mr. Heinsite’s criticism correct and justified.
