Martin Predicts 'Some' Tax Cuts
WASHINGTON. Jan. 4 (UP) House Speaker Joseph W. Martin. Jr., predicted today the Republicans wiil slash government spending enough to permit “some" new* tax cuts this year. He said these will be over and above the cuts that went into effect Jan. 1 when personal inoMne taxes were reduced about 10 percent and the excess profits lax was wiped out altogether. The Massachusetts Republican told a reporter he couldn't predict “how- much more" taxes might be cut. Nor did he say just where reductions would come. But experts of the Treasury Department and the House Ways and Means Committee are putting the finishing touches on a proposed major overhaul of the

Hovde of Purdue University. 19S4 Auto Plates On Sale In State The new 1954 large maroon and white automobile license plates went on sale at license branches over Indiana today. W. L. Wilkinson. Commissionei of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, announced that application blanks have been mailed t<$j 2.200,000 Hoosier motoriats. The large-sized plates will be used for three years, small tagr to be sold in 1955 and in 1956 for attachment to the large 1954
plates.

Y., chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, is expected to urge Congress to vote a sharp new f slash in personal income taxes but this would almost certainly meet administration opposition. Sen. Homer Ferguson R-Mich., and some other Republicans were wary' Sunday about predicting any tax cuts beyond those already in effect. Some Democrats also were skeptical. Sen. John J. Sparkman D-ALA.. indicated Sunday night that because of < ontinuing defense costs taxes are now about where they ought
to be.
