France. Aug. 15. (UPm* A 33-year-old critically injured cave explorer died last night 1,100 feet below ground as rescue] s attempted to remove him to the surface to save his life. Marcel Loubens, member of a scientific* expedition which had been exploring one of the world's deepest caves, succumbed in the :cy cavern without regaining Consciousness since he fell 120 feet two days ago. At his side was a doctor who had risked his life to descend into the precarious depths with serum and medicine for em gency treatment. Loubens. it was reported, died as he was being strapped to stretcher in preparation for hoisting him to the surface. Loubens had suffered a broken back and jaw when a cable snapped «s he was being hauled to the top two days ago. At that time he had complained of "cavern sickness" a mental condition resulting from five days in the damp cave, believed to be 3,250 feet deep. Before Loubens died, a shower ^f falling rocks temporarily held up efforts to hoist him to the surface. When the rockfali started rescuers moved him to the shelter of a nearby chamber and formed a human shield over his unconscious body. loiter dare-devil volunteers were sttrtioned along the vertical shaft, ready to guide Loubens' stretcher upward. His death still presented them the problem of moving his body to the sur-

face.
