It's Blackwood For Bridge By Baslev Plarkwood Why Mr. Champion bid four no trump when he was holding all the aces. •‘But why?” asked Mr. Ne» back in his role as a kibitzer. “Why did Mr. Champion bid four no trump when he had all the aces himself? How could his partner have any. North dealer Both sides vulnerable North (Mrs. Keen) S- K Q J 10 4 3 H- K Q J 8 3 D- K C- 6 West East I (Mr. Masters) (Mr. Abel) S- 7 S- 9 5 H- 5 4 2 H- 10 9 6 D- 10 9 6 D- 5 4 2 C- K J 9 8 7 5 C- Q 10 4 3 2 South (.Mr. Champion) S- A 8 6 2 H- A 7 D- A (j J 8 7 3 C- A The bidding: North East South West 1 S Pass 3 D Pass 3 H Pass 4 N T Pass 5 C Pass 5 N T Pass 7 N T All Pass Mr. Champion didn't think this deserved an answer. He merely glared at Mr. New and then turned away. Mr. Masters was a little more tolerant. “That four no trump wasn't a wasted bid," he said. “Champion knew his partner was going to bid five clubs, but he hud to go through the motions anyway and for a very good reason. The sequence: four no trump and then five no trump, by the same player does two things. It asks partner how many kings he has and also says the side has all the aces.” Direct Jump Itcserved “Well, why couldn’t you accomplish the same thing by going directly to five no trump?” Mr. New persisted. "The answer to that”, replied Mr. Masters, patiently, "is that
tlie direct jump to five no trump is reserved for a fine convention the Culbertson grand slam force. That bid tells your partner to bid a grand slam if he has two of the three top honors in i the agree I suit. Lacking those cards he merely bids six in the agreed suit." "That's very clear", said Mr. New. “but if ttie five no trump bid, following the four no trump is asking for kings, why didn’t Mrs. Keen show her kings?” Partner Co-operates "A fair question.” Mr. Masters answered, smiling. And. incidentally, the bidding of this hand is a good illustration of the fact tiiat partnership co-operation is tlie backbone of the Blackwood convention Many players think the four no trump bidder is captain of tlie hand from then on. Not so. In this deal, when Mrs. Keen learned that her side had all the aces, she could count 13 tricks by straight arithmetic. If she had just shown her kings by a bid of six spades, it might have been that Mr. Champion still could not have counted 13 tricks. He might have passed and the grand slam would have been missed.
