•‘CARLO AND STEVE” Haw a Motto! Most business-men have mottos hanging tround the plac e like "DO IT NOW" or KEEP SMILING” others go in for humorous mottos like "If it first you don't succeed STOP .... therp' s no use knocking yourself out" "Carlo and Steve" are old copy-cats too. They have to have i motto Just like everybody else Their s is pasted inside their checkbook and reads: "If you keep putting too much in here, ou re NOT passing on enough bargains to your c ustomers”. The bookkeeper keeps raising heck because Carlo and Steve's checkbook never balances . . . guess it must be because they keep dishing out jargains like these: •

To find out atMinr. her parinerV aces, she uses the Gerber fourclub convention instead of the Blackwood four-five no trump. | Mr. Masters always tries to keep his partners happy by going
with their pet bids.
In today's hand, however, Mrs. Rhule got into trouble, reaching i *';im and watching her opponent; take the first two tricks ,
with the red aces. Made Bad lltiese
By the Gerber convention. Mrs. Rhule's four-club bid asked her partner how many aces he had. Die responses are four diamonds to show no aces, four hearts to show one ace and so
* , on. Holding two aces. Mr. Maatr Iters made the proper response
of four spades.
After getting this information, Mrs. Rhule still had to guess. If Mr. Masters had the 'Tight'' two aces, slarp was almost cer-
tain.
But unfortunately one of his i e was the of clubs a completely worthless card^-in this particular deal. Mrs. Rhule decided to gamble and bid six anyway, with the gruesome result mentioned n-
bove.
Convention I sc less The trouble was that this type of hand (involving a b^ink suit) is no good for any convention which shows aces wholesale. Mrs. Rhule’s problem was not how many aces her partner had, but which aces. A natural cue bid of four clubs on the South cards was the best way to get the vital information. Playing Blackwood. Mrs. Rhule’? four-club bid would simply have shown first round control of I clubs. Then Mr. Masters, holding the I ace of either of the red suits, | would have so indicated by bid- | ding four in that suit. Since he held neither red ace, he wouM have returned, to four spades and that would have ended the auction

PLANE HAD TROl BI.E SOUTH BEND. Jan. 3—(UP) American airlines pilot Duane C Dunkin turned his 40-pas-senger Convair hack to Chieiygo yesterday when he found hr could not lower his nose landing wheel in attempting a landing here. At Chicago, he maneuvered and waggled the wings about 40 minutes, loosened the nosed wheel and made a "normal" landing.
TRADES JOBS ing law and order in the town, Mellis admitted it would seem -a little strange’' bossing the man who formerly gave him orders. ’’But I'm sure everything will work out fine and they’ll be no trouble,” he added. Moberly took the news phi'osnphically. 'T've had my ups and downs bi fore,” he said. ‘‘I'm going to stay right on with the departm nt and do my best.”
