It's Blackwood For Bridge By Easley Blackwood Another patron of Mr. Master.-; club is my friend, Mr. Pale. He is one of Mr. Mast "in’ favorite partners. Like a famous namesake of his Mr. Dale likes to win friends and influence people especially his partners. Never a word of criticism from Mr. Dulc, but always a willingm . to give credit. He says the system pays off. Mr. Dale is an old fox who traces his bridge career all the w y back to whist. He hasn't learned all the subtleties of modem contract bidding. But has learned to use all the psychological quirks of th^ other players to his advantage. And he dearly loves to get by with a swindle. None vulnerable South dealer. North (.Mr. Masters)

hand, Mr. Dale was doing quite a bit of romancing. This was based mainly on Ids knowledge that the opponents were not too keen on the defense. West opened the five of hearts, dummy played the eight, and Mr. Dale killed East’s king with the Ace. He figured if East had the queen of spades either both club honors or a doubleton club including one honor, he could make his bid. But in view of West’s overeall the odds against this setup seemed to be prohibitive. He decided his best chance was to give the opponents an opportunity to go wrong and the time to do this was right now. So^at trick two Mr. Dale led the three of diamonds. What West would be smart enough to unblock by playing the king at this point ? J^ot this one, inyway. He played the five and Mr. Dale won with the ace in dummy and led a small club, finessing the jack. West won with the king and had his last hance to defeat the contract. He had to cash his king of diamond;. one high heart and exit with the deuce of clubs to prevent being end-played later for a lead away from his queen of spades. But Mr. Dale's early diamond had West buffaloed. He finally came out with the deuce >f spades, hoping his partner had the jark. So Mr. Dale won with the jack, crossed to the kind of spades and* took another c|i^> finesse. Ho won nine tricks four clubs, three spades and the wo- red aces. As Mr. Dale says, you somc--imes get the best results from -he worst bids. He plays the people as well as £he cards. MARIE ZAIfAKAKOS her trip home. (Sept. 24-25.)
