MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY SCe* SWEETEST DAY OCT, 15th

W ERICH BRANDEIS Some time ajfo I wrote a column that started "What do you 'want to he when you grow up?" I made the rash assertion that "hoys nowadays all want to be aviators, parachute Jumpers, television stars or leaders of bebop hands".

Our local newspaper appar-

•tly dicj.’t agree with my opinon about modern boys. S j they interviewed six typical V.nerican boys - - five in the eventh. eighth and ninth grades and one in the fourth grade. Not one of them expressed a desire for any of the vocations I had named. But their choices convinced .ie again that we have nothing o worry about as far as modern outh is concerned; that boys are boys, no matter in what century they live; and that the future of America is quite safe, provided we leave our country o the common sense of the new feneration instead of messing • round with it ourselves. The first boy wants to be a "rtoonlat.

"I draw pictures on paper vhen 1 should be studying. 1 hink I might get together with omehody who can write stores to fit around the characters I draw.” That's what he told the interviewer - - and from the income some of your fav iritc cartoonist enjoy. I think the kid is making a wise choice.

Boy No. 2 wants to be an •eronautical engineer and design airplanes. "I have made iots of models and become more and more in-

terested in tlic maintenance as well as the design." he said. His father could not have chosen better for the hoy. The third boy wants to own his own garage. "1 like to work on cars and 1 motors and things mechanical.” he said. And with the usual disdain of a ninth-grader for women, he added, “I suppose repairingsome lady's fender would be part of the day’s work.” The fourth lari shows a lot of

good common sense even

early age.

"I used to want to be a base- ,

ball player, but I gave that up ' because baseball players can on- !

ly play for a few years." So. like boy No. 2, he.

at his I ion. being the transportation of

The fifth youngster, age thirteen, intends.to bo a struct-

.iral engineer.
