Cjven if your wife is in the bed right next to you, you are completely alone with yourself, and everything looks about three times as bad as it could possibly be. There you arc just you, confronting yourself, nobody to talk to (unless you want to wake up your wife, which you had better not) entirely dependent upon your own thoughts. You have experienced it, I am sure. But had as it is, I discovered something worse last night Wp had traveled leisurely along' the St. Lawrence River f-om Montreal to Quebec, enjoying all the picturesque sights on the way. Not even a most awful lunch had marred the trip The place had a romantic French name, which enticed m< more and more as billboard after billboard proclaimed the fact that we were coning nearer to it mile by mile. said "If that place were any good it wouldn' t have to put up billboards all over the landscape." But I insisted that we must try this particular place. "Look at that name. Typically French. And look how artistic .he are,” I said. The wife just grunted, but Jidn't argue. So we went to this "typically French" place. The first thing that greeted us was a party of tourists from Brooklyn.

We knew they were from Brooklyn because one of them, a big. fat fellow with a loud sports shirt, was shouting, for all to hear: "I ought to know. I was born and brought up in Brooklyn.” Whereupon a lady in the pa—y encountered w'ith "Well, you ain’t the only one. So was I.” Then we heard snatches about Flatbush Avenue and the Dodgers and several other Brooklynese things -all this in the "typically French’" place on which I had insisted.

Then came the menu. Liver and bacon, but they were out of liver. Hamburger steaks on which neither my wife nor'I would take 'a chance. So finally we wound up with two "typically French" dishes the wife with chicken a la King, consisting of a slice of soggy

toast with a lot of sauce a la library paste on top. and a few bites of tasteless chicken in between. I had some haddock fried in fat. The "typically French" dessert was canned applesauce for me, vanila ice cream for the wife. And the coffee was awful.

But back to what I was talking about in the beginning. It's bad enough to wake ;.p at

two a. m. when you are at home and well. But it is terrifying when you are away from home and sick! On the way to Quebec I developed the sniffles. By the time we arrived I was sneezing. And at two a. m. 1 woke up in my hotel bed with a sore throat Was I sqatjeU! 1 was sure it was pneumonia! Ambulance to the hospital! Dead the next day! Shipped home in a coffin! All that trouble for my poor wife,

who was peacefully sleeping in the next bed! It was horrible! May it never happen to you.

P. S. I gargled with hot water and salt as soon as I got over the first scare. The sore throat was all gone by morning. We are now leaving for La Dame Blanche, a “typically French" place, where we will have our lunch. This is the wife's discovery.
