Nearly fifty members and guests of the Indiana Roadside Cxincil, Crawfordsville district, of which Futnam County is a part, met at beautiful Ernie Pyle doadside park near E-ana, Indiana on Sept. 15 for their outdoor autumn meeting. A picnic dinner was served at noon which was followed by an address by Hon. Cecil M. Harden, member of Congress. After taking her interested audience on an imaginery trip around Washington to see what a day with a busy congresswoman is like, Mrs. Harden, who rpoke on the subject "Cleat Vision,” stressed the need of clear vision in government as well as along our highways. Mr. J. C. Wells, district landscape supervisor, spoke of work being done by the State Highway Department to improve roadside • est parks. He mentioned that 25 per cent of the letters in suggestion boxes ask for more of these parks. As the House-passdd measure was called up for debate, Sen. Harry K. Byrd, D., Va., who opposed it in the Armed Service Committee, said he was "leading any fight" against the bill on the Senate floor. “1 expect it will pass,” he added. The bill would raise pay scales for the army, navy, air force, marine corps, coast guard, coast and geodetic survey, public health service, reserves and the national guard.

The jury of 10 men and tws women returned the verdict today after deliberating for tun hours in the ease of Kay Van Voorhis, 06, ex-attendant at the Richmond State Hospital. HAS NO COMMENT CHICAGO, Sept. 23 (UP)— Tile sister of Bobby Franks said today that she "had no felling one way or the other” about the possible parole of Nathan Leopold who helped kill her brothel in a 1924 "thrill slaying.” Mrs. Josephine Franks GlaSei of suburban Glencoe, the only surviving relative of Franks, said she had nothing to say about Gov. Adlai Stevenson’s com v.untation making Leopold eligible for parole in January. 1953. Leopold's partner in the crime, Richard Loeb, was stabbed ti death by another prisoner at the Illinois State prison in 1936. The 99-year sentence of Leopold, the scion of a wealthy Chicago family, was reduced to 85 years by Stevenf«n largely because the 44-year-old convict volunteered for yyar-time ..._;a experiments.
