Truman, Demo Leaders Confer

WASHINGTON. Sept. 22.— (UP) President Truman invited his congressional lieutenants to the White House today to discuss the legislative program for

1 the rest of this session.

Speaker Sam Rayburn insisted in advance of the meeting that it is up to the legislative leaders themselves to decide what measures they will work on in the next few weeks. But it was a safe bet that they would be amenable to any suggestions of-

fered by Mr. Truman.

The President’s conferences with his congressional -big four" Vice President Alben W. Barkley, Senate Democratic Leader Scolt W. Lucas, House Democratic Loader John W. "MeCiu

mack ami Rayburn usually are held on Mondays. Inasmuch as there have been no conferences recently, however, because of the month’s va> ation taken by the House. A special meeting was arranged for this morning. It has already been decided that the House will transact no bus.Vcss of importance this week, since there is considerable doubt that a quorum will be on hand before Monday. The Senate was slated to start voting on. the foreign arms aid program late todav.

0

The House got back in the swing of things yesterday by sending to conference with (tv Senate appropriations bills for the military establishment arid Interior Department. Already in conference are appropriations bills for the army’s rivers and harbors work and the Economic I Cooperation Administration.
