for $300 in 1870, today was back in the family after a grandson paid $2,000 for it. The grandfather was Hamilton , Rerick, who had acquired an ! 80-acre homestead in what is , now Portage Township, St. /ojtph county, back in 186r). He j sold one acre of it five years | later for a grade school site. • 1 he old Rookhill school, which j occupied the acre, finally was j abandoned and pupils sent to I other schools. The acre was sold j by the township at a public auc- ' tion. Howard D. Rerick, the grandson, was the successful bidler at .$2,000 a $1,700 profit for
the township.
Howard Rerick exp-.ained that he felt the deal was worth it, just to get the missing acre back in the homestead tract, where
