ARMY WORM CAUSING DAMAGE TO CORN tTtOP Dr. J. J. Davis, hfail of the entomology department'of the Pur'ue University Agricultural Exicriment Station, says that many oporto are being received at hi'j fficp on damage to corn by the
fall army worm. He adds that most reports to date have come irom the southern half of the state but it is not unlikely the insect may spread to the northern section. Prof. Davis points out that the fall army worm, sometimes called the southern grass worm, eats in the whorl of late planted corn, riddling the foliage and the emerging tastfel, and may also eat into developing ears with resulting damage .o the kernels. "They usually do not burrow in the stalk as does the corn borer," he states, f'he onto "ologist also explains that this insect winters over in the extreme southern states and reaches Indiana in late summed nr early fall months after succeeding generations of the idults., which are moths, migrate northward. Control is possible, the entomologist explains, by dusting the plants, especially the whorls with three to five percent DDT ’•ust or a five percent chiordanc lust. He adds that a liquia spray may b" used, mixing two pounds j of wettable powder with 100 gallons of water.
