Shirley Delays Channel Swim
DOVER. ENG. Aug. 16 — (UP)- Shirley May Fiance postponed for 24 hours today her attempt to swim the English Channel. The air ministry informed the 17-year-old high school student fro.n Somerset, Mass., that winds and some rain could be expected to sweep the channel late today. As a result, she planned tc take only a conditioning swim. But she will be ready to leave for France at any time if the weather should prove better than predicted. Manager Ted Worner announced that Shirley would start her Cap Gris Nez to Dover grind whenever the air ministry promised favorable weather for 24 hours. "If this doesn't happen by Thursday," Worner said, “Wc shall have to make other plans and she will have to go back into training. At the moment she is in peak form." The young channel aspirant, who hopes to crack Gertrud*’ Elderle's record, will swim (he channel waters to the swing of popular music. She has suggested that a phonograph and sound equipment be put aboard the pilot boat Providence which will accompany her. She usually swims to the tune of "Slow Boat to China," humming it in time to her stroke, but on the channel attempt she had asked that jive, records be played. straw' hats CLEANED 24 HOUR SERVICE WHITE CLEANERS
