Beast Eludes Hunting Party GOOSEV1LLE, 111.. Aug. 10 (UP) An Illinois conservation supervisor who led 100 men in a hunt for the "monster of Gooseville" said today he wos convinced that the beast really exists. The men armed with shotguns ranged through the Indiana creek bottomlands last night and found tracks "at least eight inches long” similar to the pawprints of a bear. But the hunters caught no sight of the monster itself. Their sweep through the valley netted them exactly two dead raccoons, one dead possum and innumerable live chiggers. The hunt was led by Henry Gerdes, a state conservationist commission supervisor and ma. - or of nearby Bcthalto. “The bear or whatever it U outsmarted us," he said. “But we found enough evidence to convince me that he actually exists. W’e’re not giving up. Weil bo back with more men nml hound dogs the next time heV sighted." Two men who searched the east side of the valley, John ixirs'ch and R. B. Seegar of Brighton, folowed the “bear" tracks for some distance but lost the trail because of heavy rain and thick underbrush. One farmer has claimed that the beast killed his young bull .. Another said it -slaughtered j several head of his sheep. SUij [
