ERICH BRANDEIS
Are you kidding yourself? The reason I am asking the luestion is that I am kidding .nyself, and because niosi of t-e people I know are them ‘ selves. , __ W,. don't all kid ourselves ibout the same thingLet me give you an instance.
The other day I n 1 * 1 a nire sort of woman. She was chairman of a civic affair in which I was also interested. We spent several hours together strictly business, of course— md during luncheon she said to me, "Oh. don't call me Mrs /ones. Call me C.ladys. It's so much less formal.” “All right, Gladys" 1 said TU call you Gladys And you •all me Erich.” ”Oh no, I couldn't Jo that, said Gladys. ”1 can't ever gc' nyself to call elderly people hj heir first name."
Did I feel like a darn fool! While shaving in the morning before I went to the above mentioned affair. 1 had looked in mv miror.r And that mirror, one of my jest friends, but an awful liar, lad said to me: “By golly, you are still a pretty good looking guy. Yon* hair is receding a bit, you'v jot little bags under your eyes md there are some wrinkles where there didn't used to be any Mut as a whole you are still a fairly fine specimen of a man and. if it weren't tor his singing. I bet you could impress almost as many women as Sinatra does." Thin cones this Gladys woman and calls me an elderdy man, when I am in what is jokingly called ‘‘the prime e-i* life!” You see I had just been kidding myse.f 1 I had forgotten that, lust like prime ribs of beef, the "prime of life” can be rare, medium ar well done.
A fHend of ours was diseasing art with my wife. He was spouting a b 'it colorimposition, har.f^.y and wha* not. He told her about a paintiny he had just done and how it expressed the innermost depth of his soul. The next day we went to h.s house. He showed us the patnting of his "innermost soul." It was a horrible mess. If I had a six-year-old son «nd he hal done it. I would have spank-*! dim for ruining a perfectly good piece of canvas. But this fellow is kidding himwlf He thinks he is a painter, because there is some kind of glamour about being an artist. He is a darn good business man. but there isn’t much glamour about manufacturing bolts, nuts, and nipples.
Are you kidding yourself? If you arc, don't stop. Kidding yourself is fun. It ir an outlet for suppressed emotions It brings a bit of romance intc drab lives. Probably Gladys was right when she called me c**eriy. But I'd rather believe my mty lor, even though I know it’s a gosh darn liar.
