Gl'AKD to drill INDIANAPOLIS, July 28 — The largest peacetime military maneuvers in the state’s history opens Sunday at Camp Alter* bury near Columbus. The Indiana National Guard's 36th Infantry Division,, com nianded by Brigadier General Jesse E. McIntosh, Tipton, begins days of intensive neld trainling, with more than 6,000 enlistVd men and officers participat|ing They will come from appioxi.nately 115 units in over 60 ioosier communities. Training will lay emphasis on small units, of platoon size. Top feature of the two weeks at the Big Hoosier military post will be a 72-hour training period in the Atterbury "backwoods," witn umts leaving their barracks to sleep in puptents, cook on field ranges and participate in platoon maneuvers under simulated combat conditions. The three-day special period will be a new experience for most of the men in the division, although more than 1,600 of the enlisted men and practically all of the approximately 600 officers who will be at the camp hav« had World War II or some previous military experience. The division's personnel will move to Atterbury by truck convoy, with some units in the far northern and far southern parts of the state leaving early Sunday morning, July 31, in order to r, aeh the post later that day.
