Emory University has been presented with a pack of the cards they used, made by hand because Imports from Great Britain had been cut off. The deck was designed by John Bell Hewitt, who was a friend of Edgar Allan Poe. It wa* presented to Emory by Mrs.
Clementine Hewitt leBey, Savannah, Ca. They are cut out of ordinary cardboard, and the designs are hand painted in water colors. The queen of hearts wears a hooped skirt and the king of spades is a man in boots, earrying a spade. The king of clubs is an Irishman brandishing a shillelagh. ERICH BRANDEIS Well, as 1 told you yesterday, we were knee-deep in maps and folders trying to figure out i where to go on o'Ur trip. Th sun was shining ami it was not too warm, so we both felt quite spry. California- that's where wt would go. But not the short way, via tnc Santa Fe Trail or the Lincoln Highway. No, we hod done that before, and in summer it would^ be hard to get accomodations. We'd go the long way — through Canada, via Banff and Lake Louise, to Vancouver, down to Seattle, Portland, Sar. Francisco ,our old home, and eventually to Los Angetes, where wo could figure out now we'd go back. W’e thought we might return via Texas, the Gulf Coast, N w Orleans, etc., etc.
But all this was before I hail started to figure the cost of this wonderful trip that looked so an Being and so colorful on the maps. It also was before the mailman came. I But then the mailman di 1 come.
There was the usual lot of stuff, and there was also a pretty chartreuse-coiored en • vclpe with a while oorder, addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. Erich Brandeis.” It was obviously an invitation, although we did not know anybody in the Massachusetts city fiom which it came. So, still full of our anticipated seven or eight-thousand moe trip, I opened the envelope, A neat little folder was inside. On the front page only "You are invited.” I opened it. Page Two vas a road m ip with an arrow pointing to the place described on Page Three. Page Three was headed by a fancy-sounding name which I will not mention here. Then the subtitle, "A Nursing Home for the Frankly Fast id ions," printed in heaven-blue ink. The text, following, was in soft-brown: "Softly played music is wired to cheerful private rooms which arc equipped with telephone and signal system. "There are facilities for physiotherapy with registered nurses constantly on duty tJ give individual attention. "Special diets come temptingly served from a bright modem kitchen. "Rates are commensurate with the high standards of care.”
