Try and Stop Me By BENNETT CERF

A MERICA’G leading composers of popular music have one f*- thing in common. When surrounded by convivial companions, all of them love to sit down at the piano—and play

their own compositions.

r VM A LITTLE , THAT CRACK j

BEULAH LOUISE OVERELL, 20, and Robert Cannon, 28, Los Angeles policeman, take out a marriage license, culminating a year-and-a-half romance that began after her acquittal with her former sweetheart, Bud Gollum, In yacht explosion deaths of her parents at end of summer 1917. They wed next week, (International Soundphoto)

Truth to tell, they cannot help themselves. Should they ever protest that they are “not in the mood” they I are accused of being ingrates

and spoil-sports.

The composer who needed least urging was the late George Gershwin. He frankly delighted in playing his songs on all possible occasions—and how he could play them, too! I remember one dinner party at George Kaufman's house where not only Gershwin, but Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers and Artnur Schwartz were present. We were having dessert in the ground-floor dining room when Kaufman rose and announced dra matically, "When I give the signal, all composers can make a break for the piano on the second floor. The one who gets there first can play his own songs for exactly one hour.” Everybody laughed and settled back for more talk. When we finally did climb back to the second floor, however, there was George Gershwin seated at the piano, happily improvising the theme o! "Embraceable You.” “I’m a little bothered by that crack Kaufman made downstairs," he confided to me. "Do you think he was kidding?’ 1 Cup) right, 4919, by Bcnjictt Cirf.
