I Imports already have been reduced to such an extent that moat and some other food rations arc lower than were during the w’orst day of World War II. Britain's plight is only part of a general European economic crisis arising from a world-wid' shortage of dollars. Unless Britain’s problem is solved, economic stagnation may spread across Europe. U. S. Secretary of the Treamry John W. Snyder, now in Europe, was expected to urge Cripps to devalue the pound as a means of lowering British prices n the world markets and making British products more comnctetive. The pound at present is valued at $4.03. Jap Executive Is Found Dead
TOKYO, July ti, (UP) The decapitated body of the president of Japan's government-own-ed railways was found railroad trucks on the outskirts of Tokyo today, less than 24 hours before the government's scheduled discharge of 30.000 railway workers. Police said they had not determined yet whether Sadanori Shimoyama had committed suicide in despair over having to carry out the government’s mass discharge order, or had been murdered by agitators against the order. They feared the incident might serve as a signal for the start of an uprising by Communists accused by Premier Shigeru Yoshida of plotting an August revolution. The government ordered 30.000 of the country’s 200,000 railway workers discharged tomorrow as an economy measure by Gen Douglas MacArthur, supreme occupation Commander. Mac Arthur's headquarters called a top-level conference to discuss the Shimoyama case. Railway union officials have been summoned to meet Mac Arthur’s labor officials. Workers had been threatening Shimoyama since the government first announced its “austerity” program for the state Railways. He disappeared yesterday after leaving his home by automobile for his office. His head was found a few feet from his body on the railway right of way. The face had been disfigured. He was identified by papers and a train pass lound in his pocket.
Great Britain Is Near Bankruptcy LONDON, July & (UP) Britain will tell thc world today how close she is to bankruptcy and maybe what she intends to do about it. Chancellor of the Exchequer Sir Stafford Cripps will give tinbad news in the House of Commons. His long-awaited financial report is expected to show that Britain’s gold and dollar reserve a have shrunk to $1,500,000,000 MOO.OOO.OOO below the safety level. What is worse, thc drain on the reserves is increasing all the time as the gap betwon Britain's mports and declining exports widens. Unless the United States again comes to the aid of thc socialist government, Britain may have no alternative but to slash to the bone her imports, especially ♦hose from America.
