ERICH BRANDEIS If. I were an otherwise beautiful girl but had an ugly wart or. my nose I would have that wait removed. If there are ugly warts on an Otherwise beautiful life, it is a writer's duty to do what he can to remove them. Life to me is beautiful. I have tried for several years
to put out i^a beauties to you, my readers and friend,s and to have you share my enjoyment of it with me.
' But today I received a letter vhich made me wonder. "You used to help us appreciate the world as it is"' he writes, “but of late you seem to put more stress on what it ought to be.”
I read over a number of my recent columns, and I find that the writer is correct. But I shall continue to mix the pleasant with the unpleasant and to make you conscious of the warts on our national life. I shall do so because, in my opinion. America is not a land of morons or of little children. America is a country of intelligence and of courage.
To be an American does not mean to be a complacent softie. We have grown by daring and by faith, by hard work and intelligent enterprise. At this time of the year, all over the country, lovely flowers are in bloom. Those flowers first were seeds. The seeds had to be planted, watered, cultivated, carefully

matured. Wherever there are flowers there arc also weeds. Unless those weeds arc torn out by the roots they will destroy the flowers. If you (Vant to enjoy the beauties of your garden, you must pull out the ugly woods. Speaking of gardens, let ms give you a little story I read this morning. It illustrates something I wrote the other day about making circuses out of charity drives. I shall omit names and places. They don’t matter. A hospital needed money and started a drive for funds. The funds were slow coming in, although thousands of people in I he community benefit by the institution’s existence. So someone had an Idea. "Let us have a garden tour, charge admission and give the money thus raised to the hospital.” There are thousands of lovely gardens all through the nearby country side. But for the tour they picked the estates of six of tne wealthiest people. And, as a special attraction, they promised a visit to "the
African game room" of one of the multi-millionaires. I understand that already a large number of people almost entirely women have signed up. Undoubtedly many will be dressed in their finest. And many will now be able to say that they visited Mr. Soandso and Mr. Thiaandthat:. There I go pulling out weeds again—or am I pulling up a petunia ? Softball News
