ERICH BRANDEIS Hcie i y prediction of things to come: In approximately nine million years from now the human being will have wheels instead of feet, wings instead or arms and a cash register instead of a

Why do I dare make this portentous scientific prediction ? Because in nine million years not one of you will be alive tj heck on my prediction and call me a liar. Neither will any of us be alive to check on the fantastic predior ns about human beings and h ■ world in general that are br:i;; made almost every day by eient sts and pseudo-scientists. A fellow columnist wrote a lew days ago that the re aro only two jobs in which a fellow can go wrong as he wants and still not get fired: Weath r forecaster and horse handicap per. I disagree. The cosmic scien-

tist can beat those two. The poor weather forecaster has to tell you what is going to hap pen today and tomorrow.

The horse handicapper better off.

is no

But the long-distance scientist need not worry about right 01 wrong. He shoots his darts of wisdon into the millenium.

If the weather forecaster is wrong he may only gel yom dre ;s wet or spoil your picnic. The horse handicapper ma.> rake an even bigger sucker out of a better than he already is. Neither can do much damage unless the fellow who bets on th; horse races has swiped his stake out of the firm's cash register.

But any kind of prediction can scal e the very innards out o[ people and cause wholesale

trouble.

When some would-be prophet predicts the end of the world for day after tomorrow, thousands pack their grips for the final trip and polish their trumpets so that they may be heady to join Gabriel's band. Even now there are people all ovei the <■ mntry wno still quote Nostradamus and consider him the final authority on things t > come. Some people believe in him almost as much as they do ! ;n certain columnists.

as much as the horse handicap-

per.

But here now is a science fellow out in Berkeley who cci tainly sticks his neck out almost

He says that in twenty-five years there will be no more billing clerks nor similar clerical

workers.

Machines, "mechanical slaves," will take their place and thousands and thousands of men and woven will be out or work. I don't wish that reilow any

bad luck.

But tor his sake I do hope that in twenty-five years from ni w there won't be an army of hilling clerks marching out to California to lynch this unia* leur prognosticator or to prese i' him with so many unpau' bill . that he'll go out of his mind.

prophetic hogwash ts that most of us are so gosh darn gullible. We will beat our way to ihc fellow who says he has a better mouse trap or who has a bettr* press agent to say so for him.
