DKOPs TKAt HMiil; OI'H{Al»:s UITHIX El DGEl Reductions m expenditures throutii cUdi nation of 3.T1 classes and dropping of 62 faculty members have been approved by the trustees of Indiana University to bring the institution's 1949-50 operating budget within the appropriation voted by the last session of the state legislature At the same time the University will increase certain ser-

vice charges.

The University’s governing board, it was announced today by President Merman B. Wells, has approved an operating budget for the fiscal year beginning today to meet the 22 per cent cut made by the legislature in the I. U. requests. The University asked $9,123,474 and received $7,050,000 for each year of the 1949-51 biennium.

THANKS, JOHN’ 0 “It's about time a good wor i is said for the law-abiding clti zen. That was the gist of a letter which came to the Superintendent’s desk a few days ago. Well, there'll be no eontroversy over the point. Perhaps ve policemen slight the ladies who make proper hand signals, th“ pedestrians who walk with the green light, and the fellows wh a .vtop at stop signs or who refrain from beating their wives. There are millions of men ar.i women who observe the law because they know that the regulations were adopted for their own

welfare.

“The truth of the matter is law enforcement agencies and officers would be helpless if it were not for the huge segment of the populace that believes in obedience to the law. It is the relatively small number of law-

les~ persons that keeps the po lice officer on the run. Because police administrators and ed icators have to give so much at tention to the problem of the bad citizen, the good citizen has bi en taken for granted. "All of us owe sincere thanks to law-abiding John CJ. Public. While he depends’ on us for enforcement service, we likewise depend on his continuing support. Mis example with regard to citizen responsibility to the law will help influence th' other kind." The Shield, Indiana State Police Magazine.

Now Tm Going Back To High School!

When I saw lights burning in the High School auditorium last night, I looked in to see what went on. About twenty people were listening to Iliuz Ellis, the electrician, talk about television. I slipped into a back seat and asked Hup Thomas what was up. Hap told me it was the new SelfImprovement Club. I stayed to listen -and learned a lot. Buzz really knows his stuff. Turns out this club meets every Friday night. Each member gives a talk on the subject he knows most about. I joined on the spot because

learning new things is one of my favorite hobbies. From where I sit, it’s willingness to learn from the other person that makes Americans tolerant towards so many different viewpoints and tastes in things. Just beeause Buzz Ellis goes for chocolate malteds, while I prefer a mellow glass of bet*', doesn't mean I'm right and he's wrong. Incidentally, ne\t week I'm going to talk on how to run a newspaper

Dock Workers Agree On Raise HONOLULU, June 30.—(UP) Seven stevedoring firms involved in a two-month-old strike with CIO longshoremen agreed today to accept the recommendation of a fact-finding commission

for a 14-cent hourly wage in-

crease.

After a three-hour session laid night, the employers said they would pay the wage boost al though they regarded it as ••unjustified" in the face of Hawaii’s economic realities. The employers said they had sent a letter to acting Gov. Orei E. Long, telling him of their ac ceptance. They said they were “assuming” the stevedores would accept the fact-finding board's recommendations at membership meeting today, although the union's strike strategy committee unanimously opposed it. The companies said they nevei would agree to a 14-cent wag increase across the bargaining
