Here I was in the midst of that almost unbelievable Cinderella story of ttita Hayworth’s .narriage to the Ali Khan. Here was a dream come true. No, it was more than a dream come true. Eduardo Cansir.o, her father, and his wife, Volga, never dared to dream that their daughter would some day become a princess; would some day live in a palace; would so.me day be showered with diamonds and nibies; would some day have more money, more glamour, more fame than any parents ver dared to dream for their child. Here was everything that any little girl or any ,big girl coul 1 ■ver wish for herself upon a star. Here was the epitome of life. Here was everything that all the laities together could possibly testow upon a human being. I was reading that story an.l .ooking at the pictures, when my telephone rang,__ It was a friend who had just, heard the news on the radio. "Bob Ripley is dead," he said. I couldn’t believe It. Hadn't I seen him on television only the other night? Hadn't I had dinner with him just a couple of weeks ago? Hadn’t he been the picture of health and happiness? Hadn't he laughed and joke:! and told us all about his plans for thes ummer. The trips on his bizarre Chinese junjt? The journeys to faraway countries he was going to take soon to gel new material for his famous Believe It Or Not' feature’? Fifty-five years old. Full of

life and plans and hopes. A few days later, on the very day on which Rita Hayworth reached the pinnacle of her career—dead. A. » t m - A strange coincidence. Two people who came out of nowhere. Two people who were living proof that there are unlimited .pportunitias in this country of ours. Two people who made front page news on the same day, but news which was about as contrasting as any news can possibly be.

I have been trying to figure it out. What is this tAing called Life? What is its aim, its purpose” What is the why and wherefore of the human being on this earth ?

I shpJl never be able to give you the answer. But I know this: Both Rita and Boo came to thetr fame because they gave service to the world. Pleasure, laughter, romance, beauty those are service just as mjuch as the greatest invention or the most important discovery.

We cannot all be a Princess Rita or a “Bob” Ripley. But each of us can give service in our way. If we cannot give it to the millions, let us give it to the few. Let us be happy while life lasts, and make others happy. Lot us not worry or brood or try to answer the unanswerable questions -Whence? Why?
