Navy Catalina • lying boat adrift on the Pacific and navy authorities said the row of 11 would be taken off early today. The flying beat, en route from Kwajalein to Johnston Island, was forced down some 650 miler, southwest of Johnston at 1 p. nv. (6 F. M. EST) yesterday after one engine failed. The n^imes of the ere a- were not released immediately. F irst surface vessel to reach the scene was the landing ship LSM-448. The freighter Grainger. which also raced toward the scene, reported at 10:15 P. M (3:15 A. M. Monday, EST) that ,l had sighted the landing ship and two rescue planes circling around the stricken plane. The grainger estimated it was about 18 miles away at the time. At about? the same time, the navy announced that the survivors would be taken off shortly. One of the two rescue planes at the scene was a B-17 flying fortress which earlier had parahuted a life raft to the Catalina The raft was smashed when it hit the water. However, the flying boat was believed to have life

rafts of Its own. The Catalina, wdiich vas cn route to San Diego for decom missioning first reported it w.is in difficulty at 12:45 (5:45 P. M. BST) yesterday. The pilot radioed then that one engine had failed. Fifteen minutes later, he radioed his position and said: "I am ditching." Soon afterward came another message reporting that the plane was down in the open sea and apparently undamaged. But at 7:20 P. M. (12:20 A. M Monday, EST) came another message from the pilot reportin'; that the plane was taking watei in the radio compartment omidships. He estimated the plane would stay afloat ror throhours. Unless help arrived, he sale the crew would have to take t life rafts. The navy related distress sig nals to ships in the vicinity.
