BOWLES URGES EXTENSION OF RENT CONTROL GOVERNOR OF CONNFXT1Cl'T DFNOI NC ES FOES OF KENT LAW
WASHINGTON, March 10 — (U. I Gov. Chester Bowles of Connecticut, denouncing foes of rent control as "reckless and iricsponsible," today urged a 27inonth extension of the rent law. As the House prepared tj take up a 15-month extension bill, Bowles said the opponents of rent controls are the sam' 1 ones who “fought tooth and naH to open the floodgates of inflation. just three years ago.” The former OP.-, chief sail Connecticut rent experts have informed him that ‘‘if .the adviejj; of thesQ. jfentlemen were accept"-' ed, we would probably face a 60 per cent increase in the rental
level.”
Bowles presented his views in testimony prepared for the Senate Banking Subcommittee on rents. He appeared as a repicrentative for the new deal organization known as Americans
for Denocratic action.
While advocating a long-term extension of controls, Bowles said the senate subcominlttee sh.mld approach the rent problem "with the knowledge that 11,
most landlords are honest decent people." The present rent law expires March 31. House Democratic leader John VV. McCormack of Massachusetts said that if the House does not pass its extenJion bill by tomorrow, a special Saturday session will be held.
