Farm News Each year during National 4H Club week we present a family that is active and interested in 4-H Club work from some community of Putnam County. This yc-ar for the Daily Banner readers we would like to present the James Nicholson family from Clinton township whose pictures with some of their 4-H Club activities appears on this page. The family consists of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholson, Ella Marie, age 14, Charles Lee, age 10 and Bill Allen, age 7. They live on a 102 acre farm three miles west of Clinton Falls which they pur- | chased five years ago after having lived as farm tenants on the Ray Vaughn and C. J. Ferrand farms south and east of Greer, castle. The main enterprize of the Nicholson farm operation is a j dairy herd of twenty-four registered Jersey cattle, twelve of which are in production at present and naturally this is the major source of family income. These cows are hand milked by the family but of course a mlliting machine is in the budget for iho near future. Hogs, sheen ;i d poultry are other less imp.)! ta:.t enterprizes on the farm. Realizing the importance and nececsity of long range planning and the importance of the bast land ude for this relatively small farm which is to support the family with a very comfortable standard of living they have solicited the services of the local Soil Conservation District and have a complete Focm Plan which is being followed. Participation and cooperation in local civic, school and church affairs are an important part of the daily lives of the Nicholson family and both Mr. and Mis. Nicholson arc always ready to lend a hand to promote or carry on any worthwhile county act-

ivity.

When Clinton township seemed to he without the services of a leader for the Home Economics 4-H Club Mrs. Nicholson found time from her busy home and community activities tc share the leadership of neatly 40 4-H Club girls with a neighbor Mrs. Fred Wichman. Clinton township had a very large percentage of their girls in club work and they received their share of awards. Mrs. Nicholson further found time to accompany her girls to 4-H Club Camp at Shakemak State Park in August. Naturally when Ella Marie reached the age of 4-H eligibility her parents encouraged enrollment and her first project was baking. Now in preparation for the fifth year baking project. Ella Marie frequently does baking for the family and from the very healthy and happy ap•’caiance of the family she and her mother have been doing a swell Job of keeping them properly fed. Mr. Nicholson whose Jesey cattle interests are more or less a family tradition hkd little trouble in getting Ella Marie interested in the dairy calf club ami three years ago she purchased a heifer in the John Ames dispersal sale. Last yeai the heifer was Grand Champion at the Putnam County Fair and now she takes her place near the head of twelve cows in projduction in the Nicholson herd. The Personal interests of young Miss Nicholson took a fancy toward the lamb club and she purchased three Southdown , lambs two years ago aVd has placed near the top In the lamb 1 club classes the past two years. Now then three two year old I ewes are ready to produce I lambs of their own which will | without doubt find their way in-

to the County Fair this summer with Charles and Ella Mari,Nicholson as their proud 4-H Club owners. Also in the second year of club work Ella Maii--enrolled in the home economics clothing project and at the end of four years she has complete 1 a total of ten projects, four in baking, and two each in clothing. dairy and lamb projects. Charles Lee was old enough for 4-H Club last year and naturally he enrolled in the dairy heifer project and this year he will have another fine heifer and if he can talk his sister into selling him one of her registered Southdown lambs he will be in tie-

lamb club.

Bill Allen Nicholson is now only 7 years old but when it comes feeding and milking time you will find him going after the cows and putting oats in the fee I trough for the sheep. When h is ready for 4-H Club work the;, will probably be a fine Jenev heifer and an outstanding Southdown lamb bred right out on the Nicholson farm waiting for him. Along with these fine animai will be an older sister and broth er and t\yo interested parents
