The 60-year-old f rmer governor died only three months after he reached his life-long goal of election to the United States Senate.

Mr. Lane is joint senator from Putnam and Montgomery counties. The two men, in point of service, are the oldest memboi of the Senate. Sen. Lane, Republican caucus leader, has served 16 years and Sen. Vermillion is cor.pletipg 20 years in the Legislature.
