While in high school. Robert took an active part in sports and social activities. He played basketball for four years and it was i a momentous occasion for him when he received an honor sweater in recognition of his service. H.- was a good student in school one who could assume 1 responsibilities and cheerfully | carry them to completion. In 1940 Robert graduated from Fillmore High School. Of the nine boys in this class, three of them Robert, Gordon Cooper and Charles Buis gave their lives
during World War II.
Robert attended Sunday school and church. He and his brother. Richard, w ■ ro bapt s. d on th- | one hundredth anniversary of the Fillmore Christian church in November. 1939, under the pas‘orate of R* v. James I. Shockley. At the time he was called into service on November 3. 1942 Robert was employed by StewartWarner in Indianapolis. He was sent to New Jersey where he \va= assigned to the Air Force. Aftc graduation from a ladio school in Sioux Falls. South Dakota, Robert was sent to Harlingen, Texas, where he received his wings at the Array Gunnery School. He later was stationed at Geiger Field, Spokane, Wash-
ington. After the crew was ] formed at Walla Walla, Washington, the men were sent to Scott Field in Illinois for the ' B-17 bomber which they were to
fly to England.
After his arrival in England in October of 1943, Robert was | placed in the 8th Air Force and the famous 303rd Bomb Group ■ and the 358lh Bomb Squadron He made eight missions over Germany, the last being made on January 11. 1944, when aircraft faetoiies in Osihersleben were bombed. Only one plane in Robert’s squardon returned safely • to its base; sixty heavy bombers | were lost on that day alone. In March. 1947, Miss GerarJa Roosenboom of Holland notified Mrs. Owen that she had found Robert’s grave. Later Miss Eilie Marell also wrote to Mrs. Owen. Both girls sent pictures of the grave, and they informed Mr:;. Owen that they frequently placed flowers on it. Robert’s body, first buried at Natrup-Hagen, Germany, was moved February 27. 1946 to the United States cemetery at Margraten, Holland. Many medals were presented in Robert’s honor. Included arc the European, Africa. and Middle Eastern Area Medal. Good Conduct, American Area Campaign Medal, The Air Medal. The Purple Heart, and The Presidential Citation.
