W herever English is used as the medium of Christian singing - and in many places where English hymns have been triinsinted into other tongues men and women will sing this September the beloved lines: “Abide with me; fast falls tlw
eventide:
The darkness deepens; Lord,
with me abide!
IN hen other helpers fail and eonforts flee, j Help of the helpless, O abide with me.” j September 1947 marks the centennial of the writing of these words and of the death of | their author, the Rev . Henry j Francis Lyte (1793-1947). A na- | live of Scotland, educated in Ireland, rector of a church in England, Mr. Lytle wrote these words after his last sermon from the pulpit he had to leave because of ill-health. The next day he sailed for France where he died almost as soon as he arrived. He was buried in the English cemetery in Nice, and there is a monument to him at bis church in Brixham, England; but this hymn, found m almost every hymnal of the
Christian churches, is
est monument. It has been a favorite of laymen and ministi rs, saints and sinners, for sev-
eral generations.
