HOI.It* * I ■OKI' HIM WASHINGTON, Oct. 9. (UAj The Marine Engineers Beneficial Association iClOi held the key today to a swift settlement of the maritime strike at all ports except on the west coast. Working on the theory that part of a loaf is better than none, the government called the engineers to a special conference to seek an agreement which would at least send ships in Atlantic and gulf ports to sea
again.
CIO officials appeared divided on the advisability of a piecemeal settlement that would leave the deadlocked west coast phase of the dispute to separate negotiations. Edgar L. Warren, chief of the Labor Department’s Conciliation Service, hoped to get the CIO engineers to go along with the other striking union, the Masters. Mates and Pilots (AFL). The MMP was ready to go back to work on east and gulf ports as soon as the engineers reached
