er.

They were able to report only meager details to the plane that landed them on a lake five miles ,,slant before the batteries in their walkie-tal. ie radio gave out. They did not report howl many had suivived the crash. However, they said they would | stait back to the waiting plane | at dawn. The PBY flying boat. I equipped with a jet propulsion auxiliary to enable it to take off from the tiny lake, was capable

d carrying 15 persons.

Food and medical supplies: were dropped to the survivors yesterday shortly after they were seen by a pilot on the tiansat-,

iantic run from New York.

The plane had cut a 500-yard | swath through the pine and j spruce trees in the area. Its wings were almost intact but the - fuselage had been burned, all but i

the tail section.

The wreckage was pointed toward Gander airport, indicating 1 that the pilot. Capt. Jean Ester. 1 had completed his turn and was j | coming in for a landing in the j fog. Ceiling at the airport was; ‘ 200 feet at the time.
