Senator Taft Hurls Charge WASHINGTON, April 3 — i UP)-Son. Robert A. Taft, R. O., charged today the administration was using ils sweeping public health bill as a device to win votes for Democrats ir* tht November elections. The measure is now the subject of hearings by the senate education and labor committee. Taft said he doubted the administration would press for action during this session of congress. ‘Tt’s just a political move to create an issue for the fall elections he® said. The first day of hearings proiduced a bitter fist-shaking verbal scrap between. Taft and Chairman lames E. Murray, D., Mont. Taft finally stalked out of the committee room after Murray told him to “shut up’’ or get thrown out. Taft announced he would boycott the hearings and indicated that other conservative Republicans might join him when he said that furthep attendance “will be slim.” He said the Republicans were preparing’ their own public health bill, which he will introduce later. The administration bill is
known as the Wagner-Murray- I Dingell bill after its sponsors— I Murray, SE., Robert F. Wagner, D:, N. Y„ and Rep. John D. Din- I gell, D., Mich. j It would authorize appropria- J tions of approximately $50,000,- | 000 for administrative purnos?® J It proposes a multi-billion dollar ' comprehensive health program including grants to states on a sliding scale for public health, maternal and child care, and | care of needy persons; National J Compulsory Health insurance; and grapts-in-aid to states for medical research and education Taft told reporters the compulsory insurance feature—based on a per cent payroll tax—would center in Washington “the mos"; tremendous bureaucracy ever set
up.
