REAR ADM. SIDNEY W. SOUERS above, of St. Louis, Mo., has been named by President Truman to head the nation’s new super-es-pionage agency which will b« known as Central Intelligence. This top-bracket agency will correlate and evaluate all foreign intelligence information gathered by the Navy’s O. N. WASHINGTON, Jan. 26 (UP) President Truman's advisers still expected today that government seizure of 133 plants would end the meat strike within a few days regardless of CIO opposi-!
tion.
There was no indication what j the government's next move would be. But it was evident that government pressure would be kept on the United Packinghouse 1 workers (CIO). If everything else fails an appeal to return to work might be made to the rank-and-file meat workers over the heads of their union leaders. Officials pointed out that any overt mov- to prevent a return to work now that the packinghouses have been seized could result in prosecution under the Smith-Connally act. An overt act could include picketing' or even urging a man not to return
to work.
While administration attention was concentrated on the meat strike, both the United Steel workers (CIO) and the steel industry were watching for a White House move to end the week-old nationwide strike of
750.000 steel workers.
A move of some sort was expected within a few days but there was nothing to indicate what it might be. There was some evidence that the administration itself had not yet decided on a course of aoticr.. ^$ •!• + + + -I- -I- •!< -I- * + + 4. ^ ANNIVERSARIES + “•§1 -l- 4- 4- -t- 4-+ 4- 4* 4- 4- 4- ijf
