Hawks Defeated Old Gold Wins By New Lebanon From Bulldogs
Roaehdale was eliminateel remi the final round of the Wabash Valley tourney at Terre Haute Thursday night by a surprisingly strong New Lebanon High School basketball squad, 30 to 24. New Lebanon's Tigers, whee speeded the beat laid plans of Sullivan and Dugger by whipping both of tire Sullivan county favorites to gain a finals berth, was only in trouble once in turning back Roaehdale. After taking a 9 to 4 lead at the end of the first quarter, New Lebanon .vatched the advantage dwindle to a scant 12 to 11 by interims sion. The Tige-rs slowly pulled away *rom the Hawks in the thin luarter to post a 20 to 15 yead, -•hen matched Roachdale's effort, n the final quarter. Noble, New Lebanon center, ■arried off scoring honors with 12 points, but was closely push -‘d by Hutchins, Roaehdale guard .vho camp through with 11 mark -rs. Hutchins showed accurate skill at the foul circle, accounting for five points on charity osses. Sims, a small but speedy guard gave a nifty display of devei mil handling and helped set u[ leveral Tiger buckets. His deensive work also played a n important part in New- Lebanon's .ictory. itoachdah- (24) Tennon, f j i Trosby, f 0 0 •■razier, f o 1 Stewart, f i i ditehell, f o 0 James, c 2 1 Foynta, g o 1 Miller, g o 0 Hutchins, g 3 4 •Vitt, g 0 0 Totals 7 10 11 Vew Lebanon (30) Fli. DePauw should have , downed j Butler, 49 to 43 Thursday ove. I at Bowman gym, but the official | score keeper failed to reallz* that Toon, of tho Bulldogs hail five personal fouls and allowed) him to play until after he had registered a field goal, which incidentally was his seventh

Toon's basket counted due to the fact that the referee ami umpire were not notified that he was ineligible and DePauw won by only a four-point margin, 49 to 45. Fortunately, this basket which shouldn't hav-e been made, did not prove to be serious to the Tigers. However, if it had won the game for Butler, the score keeper would have been to blame. Norm Knights, sub forward, sparked the Old Gold attack, after Butler led at the end of the first half, 21-20. Knights chalked up a total of 18 points. Toon and Fine each collected 15 points for the visiting net squad. A field goal by Bromer. an- j other sub, put DePauw ahead, | !4 to 33, in the second half and | thp Tigers went on to win and ivenge a 48-44 setback handed hem over at Irvington a few weeks previous. DePauw's scoring was: West 8; Winske 0; Boyd 2; -Coffey 7; Standish 8: Knights 18; Karo-' wieh 2: Bromer 2. The Tigers made good 11 outi if 22 attempts at the free throw!
line.
Charlie West, local boy who | made good at forward on the He-) Pauw varsity, probably played his last game Thursday for the Tigers, as he will report for duty with the armed services •arly in February. This is the end of the first semester at the university and the Old Gold setters do not have another contest scheduled until Feb. 5th at Camp Atterbury. Coach Tubby Moffett may also lose another member of his starting five as it is understood that Bill Standish, stellar guard, will enrol! at Wabash foi the Spring! term.
