Planned Spending

and

Planned Saving

Play A Big Part In Winning The War

fS

Two of the best ways in which all of us can help ouf Country right now are to plan our spending and to plan our

saving.

Our Government’s war efforts, you see, require the purchase of vast stores of materials which ordinarily go into the manufacture of things we, ourselves, use. In many cases, there are .lot enough of these materials to supply bo.'h the Government and the public. That's why shortages are occurring—why prices nave gone up. Each dollar you save, instead of spend, keeps you out t)f competition with the Government as it seeks materials... and

helps hold prices down ro more reasonable levels.

^ s Uncle Sam does not ex - j| |>cct you to deny yourself

the real necessities of life.

PIAN YOU* jpjfjoiNG

Buy them. But plan your spending. Buy sensibly. And remember that unnecessary and extravagant spending is a blow to the War Effort. A blow to you, too, because unnecessary spending helps send prices up ... helps decrease the value of

everybody’s dollars.

Planned spending, of course, means planned saving. The two go hand in hand. Take a pencil and work out your own plan in black and white. You will then have a method behind your spending, your saving. You can then set up your own quota for War Bond buying. You can determine how much you are able to salt away in

your bank account every week. Then you’ll be putting up a good fight on the Home Front for the winning

of the war.

Help the nation’s efforts to keep your living costs DOWN, the buying power of your dollar UP ■ 1 hi* advertisement is apfruxee! by tin Office of Economic Stabilhbition.

Man’s friend, the wodpecker, betanie u definite menace to the forest fire prevention efforts of Rangel Joe Ozanne, but he has

found a solution.

Ailjoining Ozajine’s lonely lookout station at Quail Lake is a huge water tank storing precious fluid for use in fighting fives. Ozanne thought only he knew that the tank is made of wood (unlike most of the metal tanks in the county), but the birds told him he was wrong. The comical-looking woodpeckers began attacking th i

tank, slowly at first because there were just a few of them, ’[hen the word got around and the tank literally crawled with the girds. The holes became more numerous and deeper. Despei ately, Ozanne hurled rocks, hoping to drive the birds off but hail no success. Finally, an emergency call to Ranger Les Percy in Los Angeles brought the trouble-shooter to the scene of the crime. He ordered cleats nailed around the outside of the tank and smallmesh chicken net stretched around the cleats. This maneuver has stopped th--woodpeckers, has probably saved i nert-s of timber, and now Ozanne hopes (he birds keep their big noses out of his business. PURPLE HEART DELAY FARMER Q'TY. 111. (Ui?) and now Thanksgiving 1 .

• For more reasons than ever before. Thanksgiving Day will be dear to American hearts this year. Hut even though the fearsome battles are over, it doesn’t mean every family will be united. Many gave their lives to keep America free . . . still others can’t return until the job is finally finished. Meanwhile, we on the home front w ill go on doing things we can to help the world iclearn to live in Peace. One thing we all know ... it took war bond dol-

lars to fight. It will take many more to cure. The chance for every wounded veteran to gain full recovery is up to us to help provide. Wc knov/, too, that every war bond we buy now will help head off inflation and help build toward our ow n future security. But most important of all, our war bond dollars will help speed the day when all our boys can spend Thanksgiving at home.
